Welcome to Tranifesto, a blog and website offering information and opinion about transgender and transsexual issues and experience from someone who’s been there. Tranifesto is meant to engage, educate, and hopefully, at times, entertain. Comments are welcome. Through reader comments, other readers can learn about the diverse opinions and lives of trans people.
A word about me
I am a transsexual man who began transition from female to male in 1997. Since then, I have written, spoken, trained, and consulted on these issues. I am a former teacher and social worker, and I write from a white, Midwestern, semi-middle-class experience. There are many others, so please let my voice be one of many that you hear as you are learning about and exploring this topic. For more information about me, click here.
A word about language
There are various words that I use that might be hard to understand if you are new to transgender and transsexual issues. Even if you are an old hand, you might not agree with some of my definitions. I believe that people’s definitions and use of language reflect regional and cultural variations, as well as the prevailing norms of their particular community or social group.
For some basic definitions, click here. Keep in mind that this is a general overview, and you will find variations among different groups, and even among different individuals within a group.
Is it complicated?
It can be — but anything worth learning, knowing, and living always is. Being transgender and/or transsexual is not a bad thing, and if you take anything away from these pages, I hope it is that.
Please take time to explore, and come back often. You’re always welcome here.
A word about comments
I welcome all comments, whether or not you agree with what I have to say. The more voices and opinions readers are exposed to, the more the diversity of our community is reflected.
However, comments will be removed or edited if they contain: personal attacks on other commenters (disagreements are not personal attacks); threats to do harm to another commenter, to our community, or to me; or inappropriate language used intentionally to hurt or inflame.
Comments that contain links may go into a queue to be approved, because the spam filter sees them as possible spam. You are free to put legitimate links in your comments – just realize that they might not show up right away, but I will approve them as soon as I can.
A note about my links
Any links on this site are not affiliate links. I do not receive money or favors for linking to any site.
If you find broken links anywhere on my site, I would appreciate you letting me know so I can take care of them.
Thanks so much for reading.
