Anyone who deals with the public will interact with trans people – we are literally everywhere. And a smart company that wants repeat business will ensure that its employees are skilled in working with diverse populations, including transgender and transsexual people. Basic courtesies, such as the use of “ma’am” and “sir” (and knowing when not to use them) or providing correct directions to the restroom, can signal that your business is gender friendly – or a place to avoid. While many organizations serving the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community have incorporated the letter T into their name, they do not always have the knowledge that allows them to incorporate the trans population into their client base.
